Macallan Double Cask 15 & 18 Year Old

The Macallan 12 Double Cask, Triple Cask, and Sherry Oak were among the brand's new whiskies released in 2016. After the 1824 series was discontinued in 2018, it became their flagship product. The Macallan Double Cask will become a three-expression range in 2021, with the addition of whiskies aged 12, 15, and 18 years.

The Macallan uses only newly charred American oak barrels for its Double Cask line, which are subsequently sent to Spain for a sherried finish. These casks are blended with the more conventional European oak barrels used to age Sherry. This leads them to assume that this series explores the effects of blending sherry-seasoned oak barrels of varying ages.

No artificial coloring has been added to the 43% alcohol percentage of The Macallan 15 Double Cask (as is normal).

Scotch whisky, on the other hand

This whiskey, when poured, takes on the look of amontillado sherry. It is smooth buttery in aroma, with hints of caramel and butter. Flavor-wise, it's spicier than the 12-year-old, with notes of cinnamon and cloves. Along with a caramel rum-like finish, it also features savory notes of apple pie, pears in syrup, and raisins. Furthermore, a dark chocolate undertone may be detected.

This dram explodes with pepper on the tip of the tongue and dries up the mouth. This section focuses on spices, including black pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg. As the wine continues to mature, flavors of vanilla and raisins emerge. It's lighter than you'd think and contains hints of baked apple and orange sponge cake. The oak's drying scents are prominent, hinting at almond sweetness. In addition to the nutmeg and ginger, the aftertaste is quite dry and lingers for a long time.

The Macallan 15 Double Cask exemplifies the brand's signature style

It's well-balanced, and the sherry undertones stand out without dominating the experience. Although it lacks its younger sibling's charm, the 15-year-old is substantially spicier and drier. The Macallan 18 Double oak, like all whiskies from this distillery before it, is an unbeatable classic.

There are notes of sweet raisins, wood spice, and vanilla in the Double Cask 15 Years Old, and the color is evocative of golden butterscotch. On top of all that, the liquid is as smooth as silk. The Double Cask 18 Years Old, on the other hand, has the color of deep amber honey and smells like a spicy blend of ginger, toffee, and herbs like cloves and nutmeg. It's 18 years old, as represented by the number 18. These aromatic qualities are due to the use of European and American barrels. The European barrels imparted a subtle spice, while the American casks added a faintly sweet vanilla aroma.

Four years have passed since the first release of The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old. Since a lot of time has passed, we probably shouldn't be too surprised to learn that the Double Cask will soon be offered in both a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old expression.

Conclusion

However, with more investigation, several fascinating implications become apparent. These sherried whiskies, it is said, will eventually become Macallan's bread-and-butter offering. The exceptions include whiskies like Fine Oak and Triple Cask that employ bourbon barrels for at least part of their aging process. That's a rather significant development.
